The Minister of Education has indicated that online learning will continue until at least the middle of May, so here is the schedule from the administration team. We will continue to follow the days for meetings and if I call one to check in...remember they are only 15 minutes at the end of class, so please please please be on time.

Some of you have your sourdough alive and thriving, not to worry the assignment isn't due until April 24th, you still have time. Those of you who are anxious and would like to see what to do next- here you go. Make Bread! Using the King Arthur Flour website, you are to find a bread recipe that requires only the sourdough starter and make that bread. The website has over 90 different recipes, some require the starter and yeast, some the discard of the sourdough, some even require you to keep feeding and use 2 cups of starter in the recipe. There are recipes for buns, biscuits, popovers, waffles and a whole lot more. Start with making bread. As with all our labs and posts, remember to document everything AND add pictures, reflect honestly. I do not care if it works out the first time...it's ok if it fails (see below)-trouble shoot and think about it. Once you have completed your post, add the link to the assignments page on Office teams. Good afternoon my bakers. I have been connecting with all my classes all this week, it was so good seeing you even if it was virtually. Next week I am giving you a chance to catch up with your other classes and just work on feeding your starter. Please Please Please, update your blogs, it is quite seriously the only way I am able to asses your progress (competencies).......when we are in class -no problem.
I will be available to you through email at anytime, just send me a message or I will have an office hour available on Friday from 10-11 to answer any questions you may have. Keep baking, cooking and sharing. Whenever you have time...or are bored, you are going to make a living thing - a sourdough starter. Once this yeasty bubbly flour friend is established it becomes a mother and you can share it with other people. The joy of having a sourdough starter in your pantry is you can make a multitude of other items, not just bread. You can make bread, waffles, pancakes, buns -really anything that uses yeast. I started mine a couple of days ago, it's now ready to use. I'm thinking a bread.
Things to know.
The recipe is here...on this site EARTH, FIRE, FOOD, real food from scratch Greetings all, here is the class schedules for the next couple of weeks. You are to attend a brief meeting on Teams during these times to check in. If you would like to attend an earlier meeting, send me a message and I can send you an invitation. All video chats will be at 10 or 2. Wow, now I'm not sure if you are really missing baking or are bored and want to do something different. I will take it however I get it. I have mentioned before and I will keep reminding you, it's a slow start to learning. Don't rush it, we will get through it together. My first assignment is one of the most important for your online learning journey, inventory. What do you have in the house? I do not want you to have to go shopping for ingredients, our goal is to learn to cook with what you have. You do not know how valuable this skill is, living alone and trying to survive on $30/ week for food (or less), getting cravings for something sweet in the middle of the night? You are learning to work with what you have, embrace it.
Our first task is for you to make a detailed list of what you have. I have an example you can printout and add to, or just look at it and make your own. I am going to mark it completed or not. I am not going to judge you on what you have, everyone is different and we will work with that. Trust me, I've been thinking about this for awhile. How will I know when you've completed this assignment? You are going to make a post on your blog...copy the link and paste it for me in comments on my post right here. Your post will include a picture of your inventory, and a thoughtful reflection of what you've been going through these past weeks. I am going to be busy reading them, seeing how you are and what you have been up to. Take care, remember...wash your hands!!! This morning we had a virtual staff meeting. It was kinda funny because people were typing things I was thinking, someone had their microphone on, and image was sideways and there were technically difficulties. What does this mean for you? I would just like to point out we are human, and we are trying our best to make this situation work. It is hard, no one should expect it to be perfect the first time out. That said...keep in mind when reflecting on your day, your learning and what is happening, it's not going to be perfect, we will work it out.
Now, I deal with stressful situations by baking! Thank goodness I have my Smash & Tess romper on because there's no waistband. Today I wanted to attend the staff meeting as if everything was normal...went to Starbucks (had to drive a fair distance to find a drive thru) and made a little baked good (I only had one, thank goodness there's someone else here to help eat them, his waistband can take the hit).
Just gonna say it turned out AMAZING! Kevin was like...'oh ya, that's good. You should get your kids to make it.' roll, cut and bake as written in the recipe. I find if I bake it 20 minutes and let it cool, it's perfect. FYI- we are going to a lot of experimental baking with what's on hand for the next little while. |
Below are the real days until the event, including weekends, holidays and professional developments
